Casa de Verano: A Mid‑Century Blank Canvas Reimagined

Tucked into Santa Barbara’s Rancho San Antonio, 1062 Camino del Retiro sat vacant for half a decade—a mid‑century ranch with enormous promise, but little soul. Our team, Matic Design & Build, saw the potential in its broad, flat site and classic single‑story silhouette. Working closely with the owners, we embarked on a full restoration and re-envisioning—turning it into an elegant retreat, worthy of an Architectural Digest feature.

From Shell to Sanctuary

Originally built in 1964, the home had classic ranch proportions: sprawling, low-slung lines, generous windows, and a solid footprint of just under 3,500 ft². Sitting empty for years, it needed profound infrastructure updates. We replaced all plumbing, electrical, roofing, HVAC, and installed central air—foundational improvements that would allow us to layer in modern luxury.

Inside, we introduced four refined en‑suite bedrooms (plus a half bath), a dedicated wine room, and integrated smart-home systems throughout. Bi‑fold doors in the living room, dining area, and primary suite dissolve into the landscape, embracing mountain vistas and California breezes.

The kitchen—custom white oak cabinets, panel-ready appliances (48″ Wolf range prominent among them), and book-matched stone slab walls—anchors the interior, striking a balance between everyday elegance and entertainer’s functionality.

A Landscape That Breathes

The transformation extends outside. Over half an acre now feels like a private resort:

  • Sparkling Pool: A sleek swim-and-lounge design framed by generous patios and lawn.
  • Putting Green & Bocce Court: Sport‑lovers’ features nestled seamlessly into the greenery, offering casual competition at sunset.
  • Custom Outdoor Kitchen & Double‑Sided Fireplace: A stacked-stone focal point, bridging the terrace and poolside lounge.

Secondary Unit: The ADU Answer

The property includes a dramatic ADU—soaring ceilings, two bi‑fold doors opening to the yard, a luxe kitchen, bedroom suite, laundry, and its own deck. The ideal home‑office, guest retreat, or pool house, it rivals the main home in finish and flare. This intentional design ensures both privacy and unity across the 0.51‑acre lot.

Detail & Integrity

Attention to detail is evident throughout: from copper gutters, reclaimed wood accents, sleek smart‑home automation, and discreet security, to high-end finishes that respect the original ranch form. Every restoration choice enhances the narrative—a modern sensibility wrapped in timeless simplicity.

An Inspired Lifestyle

Now listed at just under $5 million for 5 beds, 6 baths, and ~3,500 ft², Casa de Verano is more than a house—it’s a redefined Southern California lifestyle. It marries ease and elegance, embedded in a prestigious Santa Barbara school district, promising a life of comfort, recreation, and endless indoor-outdoor moments.

1062 Camino del Retiro is a modern ranch revival—an architectural symphony of thoughtful renovation, luxury finishes, and meticulous landscape design. It’s a home reborn, ready to host generations of memories under the Californian sun.
